Lucy Woodward has blended a variety of influences such as blue-eyed, soul, rock, and pop into a style that's all her own.
Congratulations on your new hit single, 'Dumb Girls.'
Did your parents have any influence on your music career?
My parents were really supportive. I grew up with my mom in America, and I saw my dad in the summers in Holland where he still lives. They both had their own sort of support. They were real classical musicians. I listened to a lot of classical music growing up, but now I’m a total rock and roll singer.
What artists influenced you the most?
I listen to a lot of R&B, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and I got ‘into’ Led Zepplin and the Beatles later on.
When did you decide to pursue a music career?
I have been playing instruments since I was six. I played piano and flute as a kid, and I played violin for a minute, but singing was what I wanted to do. At age 11, I started singing and ‘dropped’ the instruments. I auditioned for ‘Annie’ when I was 8 or 9. Every since I was young, I really wanted to sing. When I took it really serious, I was 12.
Tell us about your new album, ‘While You Can’? Where did you get the title?
It’s a lyric in one of the songs on the record called, ‘Get Out.’ The lyric is ‘get out while you can.’ ‘While You Can’ is more of cease the day kind of thing. Do everything while you can because you don’t know how long we’ll be here. The album comes out in stores April 1st.
How long did it take to record the album?
The recording process took about two months. I had written seven songs before I had a record deal. Then, I wrote four more songs while I had a record deal. So, I’ve been working on the songs for a long time, but the recording process took about two months.
Which is the most meaningful song, to you, on the album?
I think the one that represents me the most is, ‘What’s Good For Me?’ It’s about sticking with your gut, listening to yourself, and going with your intuition. There are going to be a lot of ups and downs in your life and just listening to yourself because in the end, I’m going to get what’s good for me.
What other hobbies or interests do you have?
I love traveling. I try to go to a new foreign place every year. We’ll see how much time I have now, but definitely around Christmas time when the world kind of stops and goes into Santa mode, I try to get away. I was in Cuba this past Christmas. I was in Africa the year before, and Mexico before that. So, I try to get away, and I grew up traveling because my dad lives so far away. I have the travel bug. I want to see the world.
My other hobby is salsa dancing. I take salsa lessons.
What advice could you give to other teen musicians trying to make it in the
competitive music industry?
Just find your sound. Don’t sell out, and just do what you do, love it, breathe it, and if you don’t love it than don’t do it. You have to love what you do, and put your heart into it.
Is there anything else that you would like to mention in this interview?
Buy the record April 1st. It’s a different record. People have been asking me how I feel about being in the Michelle Branch and Avril ‘category.’ I come from a real soulful background, and I listened to a lot of punk and R&B growing up, so it’s different. ‘They’ put all of us ‘together’ because we’re girls with guitars. I respect what those girls do. Michelle and I, we, have the same producer. I want to go back to some soul roots a little bit, and it’s refreshing.
