Mike, Ikaika and Bryan; when you met on the TV Show ‘Making the Band’ was that your first experience with the music industry?
Ikaika-Actually I was in an accapella group in high school and after high school we tried to put a CD together. We tried to get Baby Face to produce it, but that never happened because everybody was already going in their own directions. My 2 brothers and I actually put together a group called ‘Ano’ after that and we put together a CD with our own money. It was all our own songs and music. Then the audition for ‘Making the Band’ came, I auditioned for that and ended up making the show.
Mike-‘Making the Band’ was my first experience with the music industry.
Bryan-I had actually recorded CDs before with my gospel choir. This was nothing like what I had done before though.
How was your group formed? Who were the first members?
Mike-Bryan and I were the first members of the group. I met our current manager at the premiere for the show ‘Making the Band’ in L.A. Bryan and I hadn’t made the group and A.J. (our current manager) had the idea to take the guys that didn’t make it and start a new group. I spoke to Bryan about it and we thought for about a week and then decided to go ahead and do it. We then flew to New York to get started.
Ikaika-Mike approached me on March 24th, 2000 with the idea. I turned them down because I had just quit O Town and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. It wasn’t something that I could put my whole heart into then, so I just wished them luck. About 3 months later (June 8th) I called them to see if they still needed one more guy. They said yes, and I joined them.
Bryan- The group has gone through a lot of transformations since the beginning and we were lucky enough last September to get Jonas into the group.
If you were never involved with the music industry, what do you think you would be doing today?
Ikaika- I would definitely be back home in Hawaii in medical school or trying to get into medical school.
Jonas- I would be in sales, because that is what I was doing before I came out here. Although lately I’ve been thinking I might have joined the Marines.
Bryan- I would be back in Santa Barbara working in special events or sales.
Mike- I would probably be in school.
Jonas, is it difficult being the newest member of the group and the youngest?
Not at all, these 3 took me in like family. It was pretty amazing I didn’t think that they would be so nice and willing to help me. They have done everything in their power to help me and make me feel comfortable. We have grown together in the last 6 months and the chemistry between us is untouchable. Being the youngest is actually fun for me, I like it.
How is it living together, do you have good and bad moments and can you tell us any of those moments?
Mike-They are all good moments. We honestly, for the most part, do a very good job of getting along with each other. Because you live with someone and work with them you know what buttons to push and which not to push, I think that we are very conscious of that. I think we also do a good job of not being with each other 24/7. We all have our separate sets of friends and things we like to do. Once we are finished working we go and do our own things and that keeps us sane. That is really a big part of it, I think if we tried to spend every waking minute together then we would not get along as well as we do.
The big question on the minds of all the female TeenFX users minds is: Are any of you single, and what do you look for in a girl?
Jonas- I’m very open when it comes to women. I like beautiful women just like every other man Idoes. Lately it’s been a whole lot about personality. I dated a girl a while ago that was nothing like me, but she was cool. I don’t have a girlfriend right now.
Ikaika- I do have a girlfriend, the same one as when I was on ‘Making the Band’. There was a time when we actually broke up for a couple of weeks, and I was miserable and I just couldn’t see myself being with anyone else and so we’re still together.
Bryan-I am single. I definitely think that something I look for in a girl, especially with the lifestyle that we have, is trust and confidence. They need to be able to trust me when I am out on the road doing my thing, and to know that I totally love her. That is the type of person I want to be with. That is a hard thing to do for a lot of people, especially when we perform and we are surrounded by thousands of girls.
Mike- I am single. I think it depends on the girl, so I can’t say what I look for in a girl.
Where would you like to see yourselves in 10 years?
Bryan - We all entered into this and we have these dreams of the things that we want to accomplish. I think first and foremost for all of us it is to make sure that we are happy and that our families are well taken care of. I would really like to see us all comfortable in 10 years. I personally would like to maybe be married and have a family.
Ikaika- I would have to say the same thing as Bryan.
Jonas- Same here. I don’t think that I am the type that will ever retire. I think if I’m not in the music industry I will probably be working on investments.
Mike- In 10 years I don’t know where I would want to be, because I think my mind set keeps changing. Just as long I am happy.
Have you written any of the songs for your new CD, and if so what inspired you?
Bryan- This being the first album it was really hard for us creatively to get as much input as we wanted. We actually all had stuff to hand in, but for one reason or another we also didn’t want to sacrifice the integrity of the album just to say that we put something on it. I was the only one who did get a song on there. It was actually about my mom, so out of all the songs that I did write I was glad that was the one that they chose. It’s called ‘Running Home Again’.
Have any artists influenced you?
Ikaika- Yes, I think several artists have influenced me, but none more than Bob Marley. I have 14 of his CD’s. I guess growing up in Hawaii the mentality is very laid back, very chilled, and everybody wants to have fun. Listening to Island music and especially Bob Marley, it takes me back home and reminds me of my roots and inspired me to write my own songs.
Jonas- My major influence was Bryan McKnight. The first time I listened to him, I said I wanted to sing.
Bryan- Obviously learning how to sing in the church choir, gospel music has had a major influence in my life. I think, even earlier on my mom and what she listened to, whether it was Stevie Wonder or Lionel Richie. Iit all had a big influence on my music back then and even now.
Mike-My parents are from Cuba and Jamaica, so before I could choose my parents played a lot of Reggae, and a wide variety of music. I think that every artist in some way, from when I was 12 until now, whether it rock, r&b, or hip-hop, it has influenced me in some way.
What advice would you give to a teen looking to get into the music business?
Work on your craft, you can’t go out and just expect to get a record deal. You really need to work on your craft, if you can sing so what. You need to be able to sing well and be your best at all times, no matter what the situation. You need to be ready for anything whether it is positive or negative. People will try to knock you down and you need to be prepared for that, and you need to be a strong person. Don’t forget where you came from and never give up. Don’t let anything stand in your way.

We really appreciate everything that you have done for us. Radio Disney is the only station right now that you can hear us on. 'Juliet' won’t be released on pop radio until April 17th, but because of our fans we are #1 and we are doing really well. If they continue to support us then we are going to do everything that we can for them. We totally appreciate everything.

LMNT is a pretty tight group. i met them last summer cuz they was having a concert. i dont think jonas was in the group though. i met mike, ikaika, and bryan. they were sweet. i had a poster that said "marry me mike" lol. mike said i do and they all signed it. then mike gave me a hug :o) what a sweetie!

Ohhh... I forgot to tell you... I just heard Juliet yesterday! Hehehehe... Well, spare me... I live in the Philippines and the guys haven't penetrated the international market yet. But I was able to listen to their music and some of Ikaika's songs with ANO. Thanks to the internet! The world for me and Ikaika as well as LMNT and ANO became small. Hmmm... about the Juliet, it was great considering it's their first single. Can't wait to hear more when they eventually release their album. And hopefully, the international market. Can't wait to have them here in my country!!! I just know they'll visit someday since Bryan is half-Filipino. I'm sure they'll make it big here! Well... what can I say about these guys??? Nonetheless but S-U-P-E-R-B!!! I only have one wish though... to see them from a distance and stare at Ikaika till he leaves again... sad huh? But what can I do? He'll surely leave to give chance to other followers like me to have a glimpse of him too. I think LMNT is really talented. They do have what it takes. And for people bashing on Ikaika is really wrong. Just because he left O-Town doesnt mean anything. Think of the times when you started something and didnt finish it because you changed your mind. Or think of a time when you didnt really know your place in the world or didnt know the hell you were doing and had to step back and think of things rationally. Well that was Ikaika too. Everyone is entitled to make their own decions and his was leaving. I believe everything that happens in this world is for a reason so Ikaika found his reason. So lets stop saying negative things about people in bands because they are human and have feelings too. Plus, FYI the single juliet was in the 50 most sold singles. so before you start saying reject look at where they are and where your aren't. look in the mirror for the true definition of reject. LMNT will be bigger than you can ever wish you could be.

Great article! I've been a Making the Band fan for the longest time. All the guys rock! I have the single"Juliet" and it rocks! It is so good it can only be heard on radio disney and has been No.1 on the top 3 at nite and no.1 on the weekly top 30. That just shows these guys are for real. As for as for the haters such as Alicia get over it. I like O-town alot too even if I think Jacob is the biggest anti-fan who shows no luv for the fans. He is constantly being anti-social and it makes me mad.Personally, I think Jake should quit with an attitude like that. I support LMNT and O-town even if I don't particularly care for one member.Remember it all started with Making the Band! LMNT rocks and when their single"juliet" hits mainstream Pop radio on April 17th they will be burning up the airwaves as they have shown on Radio Disney !!!
