Mystikal started his career as a rapper back in the ‘80s. Although his unique rapping style made him a cult artist in the underground world since the beginning, it was the album 'Unpredictable' that catapulted him to a higher level of success.
Songs like “Shake Ya Ass” and “Danger” were amongst the most played songs and videos throughout the year on MTV, BET, and radio stations across the country. His last album earned him a Soul Train Award, as well as a Grammy nomination. He was seen on several TV shows, including memorable performances at last year’s Billboard Awards, and the Soul Train Awards.
How did it feel to be nominated for a Grammy Award and to win a Soul Train Award?
My CD ‘Let’s Get Ready’ earned me a Grammy nomination. I also won the Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video for the song ‘Shake Ya Ass’. It was like peanut butter and jelly. It was everything I dreamed of.
After trying to get put on for 13 years, what did it feel like to actually record your first album?
I paid my dues for years. I just simply refused to take rejection. For years I went through a lot of stuff just dealing with shiesty record labels and A&R’s. I did shows for free and sold my own pressed records. It was an adventure for real.
I grew up in New Orleans and my first big release was 'Mind of Mystikal' which was released early in 1996. Then I teamed up with Master P and No Limit Records and the record "Unpredictable" really got me going.
What Artists influenced you the most and what is your favorite album that you have made during your career?
I’d have to say LL Cool J, Scarface, and Doug E Fresh. My personal favorite would have to be “Unpredictable” which was released in 1997. It was a complete album in every sense. Raw, just pure raw energy.
Do you write any of your own songs, and what inspires you to write?
Yeah, I write all my own lyrics. I get help on the hooks from producers though. Life inspires me to write.
What has changed in your music over the years and why did you decide to leave No limit Records?
I would have to say that my music has definitely grown and matured over the years. My reason for leaving No Limit Records was purely a professional move. No Limit was falling off, and I needed to move on. Plus the environment over there got a little negative, so I just rolled out first chance.
What are some of your recent releases?
In 1997 I did 'Unpredictable' then in 1998 'Getto Fabulous', which almost got to number one on the charts. In 1999 'Mystical' , and 'Let's Get Ready' which was my biggest selling record to that time. Then 'Tarantula' in 2001 and 2002.
What should we expect from this next album?
Just straight fire. I got the Neptunes producing the first single, plus guest spots by Juvenile, and Redman and Method Man. Production also done by Scott Storch, Wild Life, and the Medicine Men.
