| hey everyone. I was looking at apple computers and the fastest they have is 1.25 Ghz, and pentium has 3.06 Ghz. I know the mac isnt that much slower than the pentium, for all i know it's faster. my question is: is there a way to find out how fast a mac is compared to a pentium? I mean, theres got to be a point when the two are at just about the same speed. I'm looking at getting a 800 Mhz G3 ibook. how fast would that be compared to a pentium? thank everyone | |

Without getting too techincal, Mac and PC chips are fu ndamentally different... so it's not really accurate to compare the actual megahertz between the two platforms, per se.

| The new mac processors are faster in a manner of speaking, but they really have nothing on pentiums. Pentiums just have more growth potential, and an apple is a really bad representation of a computer company. Who really wants a computer that is red and full of clear juice...how bizzare is that...i mean really.. | |

| The new Mac G-5 processor is a 64 bit processor. The Pentium 4 (and AMD Athlon, for that matter) is a 32 bit processor. So yes, Apple DOES have something over a pentium. Growth potential? Ask any graphics professional, particularly animation, or movie editing professional which s/he prefers. 80% of those in similar professions use Mac's by choice, even though pentium/athlon computers are available. The unix-based OS-X 10.3 operating system is awesome, and very versatile. And no, I don't have one--can't presently afford one. I make do with a custom built (by me) athlon XP 1700+/shuttle nforce-2 motherboard/512 MB RAM/350 GB HDD space/nVidia Quadra FX-500. | |

The G5 slaughters the others; power is not the reason Apple is switching to Intel in 2006. The G5 is VERY , and it's impossible to fit the fans for it in a notebook computer, which means the notebooks are stuck with the older G4 unless Apple does something, hence the switch. Creative professionals all use Power Mac G5's to make films such as Lord of the Rings- enough said.

you cant just say mac sucks. thats seriously dumb. it depends on what you want to use it for. gaming and usual office crap, get a pentium. if you do design crap and film making crap and p oshop crap etc etc etc get a mac. that . pentiums cant handle things mac can, vice versa.
