Quintessential For The Informed
Time magazine has influenced me in ways I cannot say. I wish people my age would read more this stuff instead of the latest gossip on celebrities or how to look good for you boyfriend. This and a copy of the Los Angeles Times make the perfect pair if you want to be informed of major world events and want others’ opinions on the matter. I don’t read because I think I’m smarter than other people, I read it because I want to become educated and I want to converse of more sophisticated topics than something like how to get a boyfriend or girlfriend.
I only know one kid in my school who reads Time. I have to admit, some the articles are long and boring, but man, they really hone up your reading and writing skills. These are just some of the best writers the journalism world has to offer. I like how at the end of each issue, there is an essay about a variety of subjects. Just to name a few: The conflicting attitudes between Ivy League students and those of not so elite colleges; The rising technology of the minivan; March Madness makes you lazy; Ronald Reagan’s personal life; the art of laziness, buying something just for the sake of charity is wasteful; Harry Potter is overrated; are videogames too violent. . . Sometimes it’s not an essay. It’s a political comic strip making fun of George Bush, and I know how much some of you guys like to do that even though you may not know what you’re making fun of him for.
I get fresh peaks on upcoming books, movies, new technology – I read a long article on Microsoft’s X-Box 360 with an interview with Bill Gates, how Bill and Melinda Gates, and Bono became the Person of the Year, I read short stories on the struggle of the coming to the United States from an immigrating Nicaraguan’s point of view, the Terri Schiavo case, immigration laws, Tookie Williams, John Roberts, and countless others. And I also always read the page where they get these quotations from late night shows hosts like Conan O’ Brien or Jimmy Kimmel. It’s just awesome. My family has been receiving Time for about six years now. I wish I kept the one on September 11th, so I could show my kids in the future, if in the future they ever have to do a report on it for their history class. I did one on Pearl Harbor and wish I had the issue for that one.
