I want to learn to play acoustic guitar!
I've been wanting to learn how to play acoustic guitar for awhile.  I LOVE it!  I write lyrics to songs, and now I want to be able to write my own music too.  Since I've never played guitar, won't it take me YEARS to learn enough to write my own songs?  I think it will be especially hard for me to play guitar because a have REALLY small hands.  I mean SMALL.  People notice how small they are all the time.  My friend plays piano and guitar by ear, and she tried teaching me a couple chords once, and it was really hard, but I REALLY want to learn.  Does anyone have any advice on an easy and fast way to learn guitar?  Also, how long does it normally take people to get good?

No worries about the small hands. Heh. I have extremely small hands and I started playing a Classical Guitar [the strings and frets are farther apart] and I'm so used to it that now I can't play smaller guitars too well. So it really doesn't matter how big your hands are, because you'll get used to the guitar you play anyway. Most songs are a few chords...some only a couple...so to start off you might want to learn some basic chords like C, G, D, A, and E. Go out and buy a guitar chord book. That might come in real handy. Once you get a lot of chords down, it would go easier from there. Just practice a lot. The more you practice the faster you'll get better at it. It also depends on how naturally it comes to you though. My sister likes to make music to songs and she doesn't even know chords or notes....so you could also just fiddle around and it might work :) Anyway, have fun and good luck to ya!

I learned to play guitar a couple of years ago (or rather started to learn) and as for how long it takes, it depends on how much you practice and how natural you are at it... it doesnt really matter if your hands are small, just start on a smaller guitar, or one with the strings closer together (maby a steel string as opposed to like a classical) and it is best just to practice learning chords first insted of going streight to a technique book... and let me tell you, playing guitar is one of the best ways to express yourself. i absolutly LOVE it!

Hey Jenna, I LOVE guitar too. I've always wanted to learn it, and I'm finally starting. It's not *hard*, you just have to enjoy it. Do you live a Toys R Us? I just bought a poster from there with all the basic chords on it, and it REALLY helps. You just look up, and it's there. If you can't get hold of one, go to yahoo, and search for basic chords, and copy them and make your own big poster. A good way to practice when you're just starting, is not too worry about techinique, or worry about your hands, just play. Go to a music store that sells sheet music, but don't buy guitar *teaching* books, cause those are all about techinique, and it takes the fun out of playing. Instead, buy the sheet music to one of your favorite songs, and just play and sing at the same time (it'll be piano/vocal/guitar music all in one). It'll take time to get it perfect, but you'll be so proud of yourself, and :) playing it. Don't worry about how to strum exactly right, or getting your chords down really fast, just get the feel of it the guitar first, and after a while, it'll just *click* and come naturally. Hope this helped!!
