Curious About Guitars
I've been writing my own songs for a long time now. I usually play it on my piano. But recently, I've began to take an interest in the Guitar. I would really love to play my music on a guitar!

But i have some questions about it. Firstly, how much does it cost to get a good guitar? And please
name me a few good brands.

Is a electronic one better or those original ones that are non-electrical?

How did you go about learning it? Did you have a teacher to help you out?

I've heard of websites that could actually teach you the basics of how to play the guitar. Do you know any of them? And are they easy to learn? I'm quite a blur queen when it comes to musical notes.

Well, if you could, please tell me as much as you can about guitars. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good guitars range in price....usually from around $100 and up. Most people nowadays go for how the guitar looks and if it's attractive, but you should always buy a guitar on how it sounds not looks. Guitars with no colors on the wood are supposedly the best sounding guitars....like a nice classical guitar. I wouldn't recommend going by brand names. Just go to a nice local guitar\music store and ask for assistance on finding a great guitar to start off with that sounds good and isn't too expensive. They're experienced in helping you find what you want. I wouldn't say an acoustic or classical is better than an electric. They're all different and great in their own way. But I'd say it's easier to start off with a regular acoustic or classical. Electric is basically the same except you can plug it in and use pedals to distort and add effects to the sound. I learned with a teacher. It's so much easier and faster that way. I think it's best to learn from someone who knows exactly what they're doing and how to do it correctly. That way you'll know that you're doing it right and if you have any further questions, your teacher could help you out. And if you already know how to play piano [theory and all that], then guitar will come quite easy to you. :)

When I started, I bought a cheapo Yamaha electric guitar for around $130. I still have it, but I have a cooler and RARER guitar now (The Fender Jag-Stang). As for how I learned...I taught myself. 1st, learn some chords by knowing the names of the notes on the neck. Go to www.cyberfret.com. That's where I learned notes and chords, then I just practiced a lot; now I'm better than a guitarist who took lessons for two years!!!

guitars are growing in popularity... if i were you, just starting out, i would start off with a not too expensive steel string (thats what i started with) and also start by learning some basic chordes... then as you get better, get a nicer guitar... i can tell you, my dream guitar (which i just got enough money to order) is a GPC Matt Skiba Moddle guitar... a great website for finding guitars is www.guitarpunk.com

Hey! I play guitar and panio too! ( like you care)..but n e who, a good guitar would usually cost $300 or $400, But to start off i recomend that you get a Squire Strat. And to learn, you should probably learn some of the basics from the websites ( a couple of chords.. stuff like that) and if you want, you can learn to read tabs. I take it sinse you play panio, you know how to read music, so you can also learn where the notes on the guitar and play that way. You could use either staff or tabulature to write your mealody. To get alot better at playing guitar ( and this really REALLY works!) Listen to some music and try to play it by ear.( I recomend Creed). If you keep practicing, then in a few months you could be great!
Ps: try to practice everyday!

You can always have a pickup put into your current acoustic, so you can use an amp with it!

Sally-Thnx 4 the info. I'm hoping my mom would help pay for the fees if i do have guitar lessons. And i'm playing the acoustic first since i already have one. But i'm very interested in the electrical ones..Thanx for replying!

Sweet. Well first of all, why not see if anyone you know plays, or can lend you a guitar so you can try it. You could also try to rent one for awhile, unless you're really sure, then go out and buy one. I reccomend getting a teacher, I taught myself for a year, then took lessons. I found I had been using bad playing habits that were improper, so you want someone to show you it the right way. But before all this, y ou need to figure out what kind of guitar you want. Electric, Acoustic Electric (Can be acoustic, but it can also be amplified), Classical or Acoustic. All of them share the same method of playing, and arrangement of frets and strings, so if you can play one, you can play all.

The guitar is amazing, I would recommend for you to start out with the accoustic, or even the classical (using your finger nails, not a pick.. which is what I'm playing now). But I think that the classical is harder, unless someone else has had a different experience. With the accoustic and classical, you learn the basics, so it's easier to gradually "upgrade" to an electric. I've been going to private classes for over a year now, and I enjoy it a lot, you get tips from your teacher, whether it's technique-wise or he could recommend a guitar for you, based on your skill and devotion. I go to class once a week, and the class is about half an hour, but it depends with everyone. You can rent the guitar, to test brands out. It's an advantage to rent because after a certain amount of time, when you buy it, it comes out a few bucks cheaper.

hey, a good electric guitar is usually a couple hundred dollars unless its used. Acoustic guitars cost a little less though and they're probly better to write songs with and to start off. I just taught myself how to play, and if you want to learn how to play songs by bands and stuff you can look up tabs (www.tabcrawler.com).

Hey what's up, congrats on playing guitar, it's a sweet instrument. I started playing about two years ago, and i :) it. I've gotten really good playing cause i just never stop. About a year ago i got an electric guitar, and just like you i was lost on what to buy, so i'll give you my advice for pickin a good one. First just like with anything else, shop around, cause pirces are different everywhere. Don't be afraid to ask questions to the guys in the store, they're increadibly helpful. IF you see one you like, ask them if you can play it for a bit. If you want to play more classical kind of songs you probably should get an acoustic guitar (the big fat one with the hole in it) i :) playing mine. The price can range, but the one i got is fairly good quality and has great sound and i got it for aobut 100 dollars. My electric guitar was about 250 or so dollars, cause it's a medium quality one, (i personally can't hear that much of a difference between mine and the really good ones) But when you're looking around, consider what you're getting for your money. So if you get a guitar, get one that's a good price for a beginner, (at least i would) if you want some brands for acoustic guitars, here's some: dean, Epiphone, Fender, Fernandes,Gibson, Guild, Hofner. THese are just a few, my preferance would be fender, they make really good guitars and they're prices aren't bad. As for the learning part, I have never taken lessons, and i'm doing good, reading notes for guitar isn't the same as piano, you read by numbers. ( i know it sounds crazy, but it's SO easy) if you want a really good web site to go to for learning how to read the notes (or tabs as we call them) go to ultimate-guitar.com it's a great site. Well i have tons of other good info to give you but i need to get going for now, if you want all my other info, don't hesitate to contact me, just mail me at thrashrash@ hotmail.com and i'll help ya in whatever way i can, Happy playing!

Well, let me start out by saying that it's totally awesome that you're thinkin about taking up the guitar. I play and it's the coolest instrument. I'm gonna tell you right now that you can get a cheap guitar and it'll still work pretty good. My dad got my mine and it was like...20$ and it's totally great. I actually did have an instructor at my school for a quarter of the year ever Wednesday after school. I learned how to play pretty well pretty fast, I'm still learning tho. I'm not completely sure where you can find stuff on the 'net about learning how to play, but try going to Yahoo!.com and typing in something about riffs and guitars. I'm pretty sure you'll get far from there. Anywayz...Good luck! Tell me how you're doing!
