Not the Major of the Drums
Since before I can remember I always went to my older brother's marching band competitions. I always was fascinated by being able to march and play music at the same time. More than that though, I wanted to be that person up on the podium conducting. As I got older, the dream of being drum major never seemed to fade in my mind. Then I got into high school and entered a marching band of my own. My friend Kristen, I knew her from my freshman year, was our drum major, so I'd always talk with her and all that. My rookie year got over and it was time once again for the new drum major auditions. I right away knew that I was going to be auditioning, hands down. We had the auditions after many practice sessions. Then we had to wait for the banquet (as per norm) to find out. As luck would have it, I was named the new drum major. This honor, was bittersweet in a way because one of my friends was also set on having the position. He then started to resent me and it was bad. Then I had a talk with him and now we're cool. There really wasn't much point to that part so you can just ignore it. The whole purpose of this article is really just to ask advice of anyone in marching band or any drum majors. Any words of wisdom would be tremendously appreciated!

hey the main advice i would have for you is try to give a little respect to everyone and to treat everyone the same cuz if you don't it can cause A LOT of friction between everyone
but you will do well cuz you seem like you really like the job and you want it 2 so good luck and hope you have a great season!!!!!!!  !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just make sure that you keep a nice steady tempo. I am on the Drumline(battery)and last year we had one drum major that we had to look at most of the time, because she was the only one that we could see. Problem was though that she was ALWAYS getting off,and of course it was NEVER her fault! It was ALWAYS the drumline's! So trust me,we HATE THAT! haha but congratulations on making it,and good luck! You will do GREAT!

In your new quest of drum major, don't try to dictate the band. It's a good way to catch a fast ass whoopin.

Hey! I'm also in marching band. Whatever you do, don't boss the rest of the band around just b/c you're drum major!! Our drum major bosses us around b/c she thinks she's the boss and is in charge of everything. Now she has the whole band against her and nobody likes her.
